(Week of Feb. 19-23)

MAVERICK ACADEMY
Marshall Junior High School is stepping up to offer whatever support or assistance our students need to ensure that all of our students succeed. We are about to get in full swing with our Maverick Success Academy initiative. It offers small group and hands-on instructional strategies for students that failed second semester core classes or have not passed STAAR. We have been identifying students who are struggling and sent home letters to the first round of identified students. This process will continue. Students cannot continue to fall behind each year. Therefore, we have several opportunities and expectations in place to prevent grade retention.

Students are offered tutorials weekly with every core teacher your child has. After school (Monday-Thursday 3-5 pm) and Saturday school (8-10 am) are available for discipline referrals and academic gaps in learning. We have limited placement in ISS (In School Suspension) for minor discipline infractions because students do not need to miss valuable instruction. Students learn behavior lessons more effectively if you take away their free time. Most of the time, these same students are struggling in their academic classes.

Therefore, we have certified teachers skilled with tactile strategies to help them after school and Saturday mornings. This effort may prevent them from having to attend summer school. If your child is required, recommended, or just needs more help to be successful, please make them attend. We want to partner together so our students and your child experiences success. Help us help them.

Maverick Academy will begin offering bus transportation for approved bus riders by Feb. 26. You will need to contact the school to get your student added to the list to ride a 5:00 bus before attending the academy.

ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGN
At MJHS we are initiating a significant campaign to wipe out bullying. This is a huge endeavor but it has to be accomplished. Schools are battling the impact that inappropriate behavior has on all students, and MJHS is being proactive and engaging our students in conversations throughout our school to create a more positive climate where all students are celebrated and welcome. Our students should enjoy coming to school and being around their peers. Please, parents, help us teach our students to support one another in behaviors, language and social media. It will take a consistent, intensive effort to raise the expectation of ZERO TOLERANCE. This can be accomplished with referrals for misbehavior and campus incentives for reaching goals. Be on the lookout for out student-designed anti-bullying T-shirt coming soon!

mowCongratulations to our MJHS Mavs of the Week!
